"See the world as something more than just yourself. Find your path. Make a difference."

About the Center

Welcome to the virtual Center for Civic Engagement! As you browse the site, you'll find information about programs that help students change the world. After you become familiar with our programs and services, stop in the Center for Civic Engagement office located in the NE Union, Room 222.

You'll find opportunities for learning through service, leadership and action. This site provides a forum for communicating ideas and opportunities related to civic work. It showcases important work resulting from efforts by our campus to make a difference in civic life both local and global. The site also serves as a clearinghouse; enabling students, teaching and research faculty and staff, to form effective partnerships with others interested in improving community quality of life.

Social Change Leadership Retreat April 21, 2013
Developing leadership in a civic context demands empowering students to be social change agents to make a better world and a better society for self and others. The Social Change Model of Leadership Development [HERI, 1993] is used to guide the practice of leadership in a civic context. The basic assumptions of The Social Change Model of Leadership:
  1. Leadership is socially responsible, it impacts change on behalf of others
  2. Leadership is collaborative
  3. Leadership is a process, not a position
  4. Leadership is inclusive and accessible to all people
  5. Leadership is values-based
  6. Community involvement/service is a powerful vehicle for leadership.
Register now for The Social Change Model of Leadership Retreat Sunday, April 21, 2013 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. in the Nebraska Union. Participation is free, but space is limited to 30 UNL students. Questions contact Dr. Kris Baack, kbaack1@unl.edu. Click on the following link to register for the retreat, http://involved-apps.unl.edu/a/SocialChange.
